Seoul WCS

Travels to Korea went smoothly. Race day weather was pretty much ideal other than a short delay in the start of the women’s race. I was really happy with my start position; I had a great swim and exited the water in about 20th place. I had the 2nd fastest T1 of the day and was able to get onto the lead chase pack. The bike course labeled “technical” was beyond technical, it was just silly. The course had almost 20 turns a lap, with 4 of them being u-turns. We rode on pavement, carpet on top of grass, pavers, carpet, bridges over fountains, etc- it was an adventure!! About 1 minute back was a chase back full of strong riders and fast runners. With about two laps to go, our pack grew since we were caught by the pack behind us chasing. Despite multiple attacks on the bike it just wasn’t breaking up. On paper the bike course looked like the perfect course to get away on or for major crashes, but alas, nothing stuck and everyone stayed up. It was going to come down to a running race. I hit me pretty early on that I worked too hard on the bike. I ran solidly, but deteriorated as the run went on. I still had an excellent race in my WCS racing debut, finishing as 3rd American and 25th overall.
